UF and CALS Dean Make Dreams Come True
Ashlee Skinner came into UF as a freshman in the spring of 2014 into UF’s Innovation Academy program. She worked diligently toward graduation slated for the summer of 2017. However, in Ashlee’s own words when she reached out to CALS Dean Elaine Turner:
"This summer the graduation is scheduled on Saturday, August 5th at 10:00 am, which is in conflict with my religious observance of the Sabbath. Because there are no other graduation times scheduled for that day, I am more than likely going to miss the experience of shaking my dean's hand and receiving my diploma. I have waited for this opportunity for four years now. I never conceived that my graduation would conflict with my religious observance.
I am writing you this email because I do not know what my options are. My dad migrated here to the United States from Costa Rica in the 1960's. All of my family from Costa Rica is planning to come to FL in August for my graduation but we will not be able to participate if the 10 am time is our only option."
Dean Turner was able to negotiate with the Commencement office to grant Ashlee the privilege of walking with the Ph.D. candidates in the Friday ceremony!
